METALMAQ manufactures special tools to make a part that our customer needs to incorporate into its range of shelving and storage accessories.

THE PROBLEM

Our customer contacts us because he needs to make a part that he cannot manufacture with the tools he has in his press brake. Below you can see the part in question, which corresponds to a part of a shelf that our customer needs to incorporate into his range of products.

As can be seen in the drawing, the part presents two problems when bending it. The first one, the counter-bend, which is dimensioned as 10 m/m, and the second one, the final closing, which cannot be done with any standard punch.

THE DESIGN OF THE TOOL AND THE SPECIAL PUNCH

SPECIAL TOOL

Our customer’s press brake is an AXIAL press brake with the original clamping of the AJIAL-COLLY press brakes. Therefore, when designing the tool, the clamping and the centring of the bending axis must be taken into account.

In order to be able to bend the 10 m/m dimension, we have designed a tool that makes the “Z” shape in a single stroke. Once we have the data of the press brake and we see the dimension that the special tool must have, the following drawing is made so that our customer can approve its measurements.

SPECIAL PUNCH

We have also designed the special punch for the same press brake to do the final closing, i.e., the last bending. The punch must have a rather peculiar shape so that there is no collision with the part when the final bending is carried out.

Once the punch was studied and designed, the attached drawing was made and sent to the customer for approval before starting production.

THE MANUFACTURE

Finally our customer approved the designs sent and we started with the manufacturing.

In the following pictures you can see the SPECIAL TOOL to make the 10 m/m “Z”. It has been manufactured in C-50 steel, induction hardened and ground.

In the photos below you can see the SPECIAL PUNCH and its particular shape to free the bent sheet metal without collisions. The punch has been manufactured in 42CrMo4 steel, induction hardened and ground. This is high-quality and considerably strong steel, and the punch has been manufactured with this steel to impart greater hardness to it, since having this curved shape weakens its strength if it were made with another type of steel.
